The Journey to Bethlehem: Some Facts to Know

In the second week of Advent, we light the candle of faith or "Bethlehem Candle." Its namesake represents Joseph and Mary's journey to Joseph's hometown.

We learn of this journey in Luke 2:1–7. Mary and Joseph must travel to Bethlehem from Nazareth at that time, which takes at least four to five days. Some time in their journey, Mary gave birth to Jesus.

Why did they have to travel to Bethlehem?

In those days, Caesar Augustus had issued a decree that every citizen in the Roman world should have a census. A census is a document necessary for a person to pay taxes. Joseph, a descendant of King David, must go back to his hometown in Bethlehem to register. Mary, who is heavily pregnant, goes with him on this journey.

What happened during their time in Bethlehem?

Since Bethlehem is relatively far from Nazareth, it took the couple a few days to finally arrive. Once they arrived, they found that several inns were full and had no available lodging. Seeking shelter, the two finally found a stable where Mary gave birth.

After giving birth, Mary wrapped her son in cloth and placed him in a manger.

What happened after Jesus was born?

A few shepherds were living out in the fields nearby. While they were watching their flocks at night, an angel suddenly appeared and alerted them of the good news. Joyous, the shepherds went to the stable, where they found the Messiah lying in the manger. After seeing him, the shepherds alerted many people.

What did the three wise men give to Christ?

Many people visited the newly born Messiah. Three wise men from the east went to the manger with a guiding star and presented Jesus with three gifts. Gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Each of these gifts has a special meaning.

What are the meanings of the gifts?

The three gifts have a spiritual meaning. Gold represents kingship on earth. Since Christ was prophesized as "King of the Jews," it's only fitting that he receives gold.

Frankincense, on the other hand, is an incense or aromatic used for worship. Jesus, the son of God, is prophesized as the world's savior. As such, presenting him with frankincense acknowledges his divine goal.

Myrrh, an embalming oil, is a symbol of death. While it may be shocking for some, we learn later on that Christ must die so we can have eternal life. Myrrh represents the suffering he must take to cleanse us from our sins.

Some final thoughts:

While the story is brief, it offers much insight into Christ's future. As you can see, his birth is special because he is the son of God. However, because of this, he must also undergo suffering in the future.

While we soon realize that Jesus has risen from the dead, we must also remember that his Second Coming will bring glory to us all.

Why Do We Celebrate Advent?

Advent is an extraordinary holiday that often gets lost in the Christmas hype. Unlike most holidays that happen in a day, Advent consists of four Sundays or four weeks until Christmas Eve.

Advent should not be confused with Christmas. While Christmas is a day of celebrating Christ's birth, the anticipation leading up to it is also vital. Here are some reasons why believers celebrate this holiday:

1. Advent allows us time to reflect.

The first day of Advent is considered the first day of the church calendar. The four weeks of preparation include anticipating Christ's arrival. During this time, believers reflect on preparing themselves to welcome Christ's coming. Whether through prayer, reflection, or music—we all must learn to open the year with Christ first.

2. It allows us to focus on Jesus.

Many people look forward to Christmas because of its fun activities. While giving gifts and enjoying feasts are significant, we must remember the real meaning of the holiday. Aside from celebrating the Nativity of Christ, Advent also serves as a reminder of his second coming. When he returns, we will find our place in heaven with him.

Additionally, celebrating Advent allows us to appreciate Christmas more. When we acknowledge our waiting for Jesus' arrival, we become even more appreciative when he arrives!

3. It allows us to celebrate God's love.

The Advent wreath is full of symbols. Usually made with evergreens, the wreath symbolizes continuous life. The wreath also represents God's eternity; through Christ, we may find everlasting life.

Aside from the wreath, each candle serves an essential holiday purpose. The first purple candle represents hope because of the prophecy of Christ's arrival. The second purple candle represents faith, which reminds us of Mary and Joseph's journey to Bethlehem. The third pink candle represents joy when Christ finally arrives. The final candle is purple which means peace. The last candle also acknowledges the angel's words, "Peace on Earth, Good Will Toward Men."

An additional candle, which is relatively new, is white and placed in the center of the wreath. People usually light this final candle on Christmas Eve, representing Christ's purity as our savior.

Bottomline:

In conclusion, these are just some reasons why we celebrate Advent. To learn more about this holiday, consider visiting your local church. The first day of Advent for 2022 starts on November 27, 2022, and ends on December 24. If you want to make a wreath in your home, please be careful with lighting candles.

Bible Verses that Celebrate Advent

Advent is an essential season in most Christian calendars. Many denominations celebrate the holiday by preparing a wreath and lighting candles. However, another essential part of the season is selecting the relevant passages. Here are some verses that remind us of the holiday's importance:

1. Isaiah 9:6–7 (NIV)

For to us a child is born,

to us a son is given,

and the government will be on his shoulders.

And he will be called

Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,

Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Of the greatness of his government and peace

there will be no end.

He will reign on David's throne

and over his kingdom,

establishing and upholding it

with justice and righteousness

from that time on and forever.

The zeal of the Lord Almighty

will accomplish this.

This passage is fitting for the first week of Advent. During this time, believers will light a "Prophecy Candle," which symbolizes hope.

2. Luke 2:1–7 (NIV)

This passage talks about the birth of Jesus. This week will also focus on lighting the Bethlehem candle, representing Mary and Joseph's journey.

In those days, Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to their own town to register.

So, Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem, the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.

While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

3. Luke 2:8–21

This verse continues Mary and Joseph's journey, which introduces the shepherds. It also includes the angel's praise of the Messiah's birth. Remember to light the pink candle of joy for this week. This verse also includes the angel's appearance, you can repeat this verse for next week's lighting.

Reading and reflecting on the Lord's word is a great way to keep us grounded during the holiday. Aside from these verses, other ways to celebrate Advent include singing songs. To God be the Glory!

How to Celebrate Advent with the Family

In my book, "Life in the Neck Advent of Christmas," siblings Eli and Elsie celebrate Advent. Advent is the liturgical holiday that leads up to Christ's Nativity, which usually falls on Christmas.

Most Christians celebrate Advent by lighting a special candle each Sunday in the four weeks leading up to Christmas.

What makes Advent unique is that it helps families focus on the true meaning of the holiday. From Christ's humble birth to his legacy, celebrating Advent keeps us grounded on what is truly important.

Suppose you are like most American families and would like to celebrate Advent. Here are examples of how to make it into a family tradition:

1. Light up special Advent Candles.

Advent involves lighting up special candles on a wreath. Every Sunday leading up to Christmas, families may light up a candle and pray before they start reading. Some advent candles come in different colors, which include purple, pink, and white. Each of them has its special meaning.

- For the first two weeks, the candle will be purple. The first symbolizes hope and is known as the "Prophecy Candle." Isaiah foretold the birth of Christ in Isaiah 9:6.

- The second candle symbolizes faith. This candle is the "Bethlehem Candle," representing Joseph and Mary's journey.

- The third candle is pink, also called the "Shepard's Candle." This candle reminds us of the joy the world experienced when Jesus was born.

- On the fourth week, the candle is purple this time and marks the final week of prayer and penance. This candle is called the "Angel's Candle," which symbolizes peace on earth.

- Many modern celebrations include a fifth candle lit on Christmas Eve. This white candle is called the "Christ Candle" and is in the center of the wreath.

When lighting candles, it's essential to observe proper safety measures. However, fake candle lamps can be safer alternatives.

2. Share Stories and Scriptures related to Advent.

After lighting the candle each week, it helps to reflect on some of the passages related to Advent. If you have younger children, consider sharing stories related to the holiday. Here are some stories for suggestions:

- Isaiah delivering God's message of the Messiah's birth

- Mary and Joseph's journey to Bethlehem

- The Three Wise Men

3. Practice Charity.

Another way to have a meaningful advent is to spread joy within the community. Teach your children the gift of giving by donating old clothes, toys, and books to a local charity. You can also bake treats together and share them with neighbors and loved ones!

4. Attend your local church during Advent.

Consider attending church every Sunday for advent masses from the weeks heading into Christmas. Allow yourself to connect with the holiday's themes and enrich your family's spiritual health.

Advent is a time of focusing on our Savior's birth. For more suggestions, visit your church to see if there are advent-related activities.

The Power of Physical Touch

In the book Jeannie Ann's Grandma Has Breast Cancer, there's a scene where Jeannie Ann visits her grandma. When Jeannie Ann arrives, she is unsure of what to say. So, she gives her grandmother a big hug and a kiss. This act of physical affection provides Jeannie Ann's grandmother with emotional comfort and healing during a difficult time.

Human beings are wired for connection, and physical touch is one of the most basic and essential contact forms. Research has shown that physical touch can profoundly impact our health and well-being. Here are just a few ways that physical touch can benefit cancer patients.

Physical touch can reduce stress levels. Stress weakens the immune system, which makes it more difficult for the body to fight off disease. Cancer patients who receive regular massages or other forms of physical touch have been shown to have lower levels of stress hormones in their bodies.

Physical touch can ease the pain. Cancer patients often experience pain due to their treatments or the tumors themselves. Studies have shown that massage therapy can be an effective way to reduce pain in cancer patients. Massage therapy has also been shown to help reduce phantom limb pain in amputees.

Physical touch can boost immunity. When we are touched, our bodies release oxytocin, a hormone that has been shown to boost immunity. Oxytocin is also known as the "cuddle hormone" because it is released when we hug, kiss, or cuddle with someone we love. Cancer patients who receive regular oxytocin boost through physical touch may have an easier time fighting off infection and disease.

The power of physical touch should not be underestimated. Whether a hug from a loved one or a massage from a professional therapist, physical touch can provide cancer patients with much-needed stress relief, pain relief, and immunity boosts. If you know someone battling Cancer, consider hugging them today—it just might be exactly what they need.

The Emotional Toll of Cancer

In the book Jeannie Ann's Grandma Has Breast Cancer, young Jeannie Ann asks her grandma if Cancer hurts. Her grandma replied, "Cancer can make our feelings hurt way down deep inside." This is a powerful lesson that many people can learn from.

It's easy to see how Cancer can cause physical pain. The treatments, the surgeries, the fatigue, and more can all take a toll on a person's body. But it's important to remember that Cancer also causes emotional pain. The worry, the anxiety, the stress, and the sadness can be overwhelming for someone dealing with Cancer.

The worry and anxiety of Cancer can be debilitating. A person with Cancer may worry about their health, treatment, job, finances, and family. They may worry about the future and what will happen if they lose their battle with Cancer. The anxiety of not knowing what will happen can be overwhelming.

In addition to worry and anxiety, Cancer can also cause stress. Stress can come from all aspects of a person's life - from their job, relationships, and environments. It can be hard to cope with all the changes that come with Cancer. The treatments, the appointments, the medications - it can all be very stressful. And when a person is under a lot of stress, it cannot be easy to focus on anything else.

A diagnosis of Cancer can also lead to feelings of sadness and loneliness. It can be hard to see your friends and family going about their lives while you're in the hospital or at home receiving treatment. It's natural to feel isolated during this time.

Cancer not only hurts physically but also takes an emotional toll on patients and families. It's important to remember that people with Cancer are fighting a battle on both fronts. If you know someone who has been diagnosed with Cancer, offer your support and understanding. It'll make a world of difference in their fight against this disease.

The Importance of Family for a Cancer Patient

When you're fighting Cancer, it can feel like you're in it all alone. You might feel like you're the only one who understands what you're going through and that no one else can help you. But that's not true—your family can support you during your cancer journey. In the book Jeannie Ann's Grandma Has Breast Cancer, the importance of family for a cancer patient has also been highlighted.

Here are three ways having a supportive family can make all the difference for a cancer patient:

Emotional support: Dealing with Cancer can be an emotional rollercoaster. One minute you might feel hopeful and optimistic, and the next minute you might feel scared and overwhelmed. It's normal to experience a wide range of emotions during treatment, and having a supportive family can make all the difference. They can provide much-needed encouragement when you're feeling down and be a shoulder to cry on when you need it.

Practical support: Cancer treatment can be physically and mentally draining, making everyday tasks impossible. That's where your family can help out. Whether picking up groceries for you or taking your dog for a walk, practical functions like these can take a load off your plate and allow you to focus on getting better.

Financial support: Cancer treatment is expensive and is not always covered by insurance. If you're struggling to cover the costs of treatment, your family may be able to help out with medical bills or even day-to-day living expenses. This can take a massive weight off your shoulders and allow you to focus on getting well.

If you're dealing with Cancer, know that you don't have to go through it alone—your family can be there for you every step of the way. From providing emotional support to offering practical help, your family can make all the difference during this difficult time. So lean on them when you need to and know they'll be there for you.

Cancer is Not a Death Sentence

One of the first things Jeannie Ann learns in the book Jeannie Ann's Grandmas Has Breast Cancer is that Cancer is not always fatal. During this time, Jeannie Ann continues to spend time with her grandmother and create lasting memories. This eventually leads to Jeannie Ann's understanding that Cancer does not have to be a death sentence; sometimes, people can beat the disease and live long and happy lives.

If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with Cancer, it is essential to remember this lesson and keep fighting. Here are three reasons why Cancer is not a death sentence:

1. Early detection is key.

The earlier Cancer is detected, the better the chances are for successful treatment. While there is no surefire way to prevent Cancer, early detection can dramatically increase the chances of survival. Remember to schedule regular check-ups with your doctor and to be vigilant about any changes in your health.

2. Advances in medicine mean more treatment options than ever before.

In the past, Cancer was often treated with highly invasive procedures that did more harm than good. Many different treatment options are available today, from surgery to radiation to chemotherapy. Your doctor will work with you to develop a treatment plan that is best for you.

3. You are not alone.

Cancer can be a very isolating disease, but you are not alone. Many support groups and resources are available to help you through this difficult time. Contact family and friends for support and look into local resources like cancer centers or hospitals. YOU can also join an online community like Cancer Survivors Network (CSN), where you can connect with others who have been through similar experiences.

Jeannie Ann's grandma taught her an important lesson in Davies' book - Cancer is not a death sentence. Remember these three things if you or someone you love has been diagnosed with Cancer: early detection is critical, many different treatment options are available, and you are not alone. With these lessons in mind, continue fighting and never give up hope.

I think this is an important book for children because it helps them understand what Cancer is and how to deal with it in a healthy way. Cancer can be a complex subject for adults, let alone children, so this book provides a good starting point for discussion.

Just because someone has Cancer does not mean they will die instantly; they are still the same person they have always been - just with a few extra scars.

How Children Can Play a Role in a Support Network

Many people often make the mistake of not including their children when it comes to sharing grave medical news. In my book, "Jeannie Ann's Grandma Has Breast Cancer," Jeannie Ann overhears her parents discussing their loved one's cancer diagnosis.

Jeannie, only six years old, doesn't understand cancer and its effects on the body.

However, after her mother explains the disease to her and how it develops, little Jeannie Ann starts playing an unexpected caregiver role in her grandma's support network. She visits her grandma, asks her questions, and even helps her look pretty after she lost all her hair from chemotherapy.

While we can't expect our children to be primary caregivers. They can still play a comforting role for our loved ones. Here are some ways how they can play a role in a support network:

1. They can provide a distraction.

Children are naturally curious. They ask many questions to understand how the world works around them. When it comes to their loved ones having cancer, children can provide a comforting distraction by asking questions, sharing stories, and playing games.

That is not to say that children should keep on talking. Alternatively, teaching them to stay silent when they don't know what to say is alright as long as they show they care.

2. They can help make get-well cards.

Children often have a limited vocabulary when expressing their sympathies and feelings. To help lift your loved ones up, consider suggesting that your child make get-well cards. Let them express their creativity and let them know that their relative appreciates their sweet gestures.

3. They can help with post-treatment.

Jeannie Ann helps her grandmother adjust to her hair loss by helping her mother wrap beautiful scarves around her head. You can teach your child the fundamentals of caregiving by listening to their suggestions on what hats or scarves your relative may prefer after chemotherapy.

A child's innocence can provide a sweet distraction from the emotional pain of a cancer diagnosis. However, adults must learn when to give their children certain information about the condition. When you teach children to be compassionate and empathetic, they become kind and well-grounded adults in the future.

Why Listening is Important

Jeannie Ann is a six-year-old girl who discovers her grandmother has breast cancer. The book offers a comprehensive explanation that helps young children understand the disease. It also covers certain aspects like how the disease forms, its treatment, and what a family member can do to provide support.

One important step we can all do to offer support is to listen. While it may seem too simple, there are actually many benefits that I've listed in my book.

Here are some explanations of why we need to listen to our loved ones, our doctors, and our family members:

1. It aids with communication. Listening is an integral part of communication. When we learn to listen, we can help our loved ones cope with their disease as they undergo treatment.

2. It offers safety and security. Communicating effectively helps ease the fears and anxieties your children or loved ones may experience. Listening allows them to express their emotions better because they know you won't misunderstand them.

3. It creates trust. Effective communication with loved ones, doctors, and children helps establish a sense of confidence. This strengthens our bonds and allows us to find a better care plan for our loved ones.

4. Creates validation. Listening to your children's feelings helps validate their worries, fears, and confusion. Additionally, active communication offers an opportunity to answer any potential questions they may have.

5. Offers assurance. Jeannie Anne thought that it was her fault her grandmother had cancer. Fortunately, her mother could quell her fears and worries by telling her the nature of the disease and how it progresses. When we learn to listen, we can help ease our children's concerns and provide an educational opportunity for them to understand the disease and its progress.

Listening is an essential element in any relationship. To learn more about teaching children the nature of cancer and its dangers, purchase a copy of my book on Amazon or send me a message.

How to Explain Cancer to Kids

Cancer is a severe illness that can start anywhere in the body. In my book, "Jeannie Ann's Grandma Has Breast Cancer," the protagonist discovers her grandmother has cancer but has no idea what the disease is until later.

Part of the reason why I wrote this book is to explain this disease to children. One such reason why children should learn about this disease is that they need to understand the importance of health and how the body works.

Cancer, unfortunately, can happen anywhere in the body. This disease occurs when specific body cells grow abnormally, spreading to other parts of the body and creating tumors. Tumors are either benign (not cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). When a person's tumor is malignant, they require immediate care, or else it'll spread to other parts of the body. This can be deadly, rendering the body weak and eventually unable to generate healthier cells.

While the topic is serious, we mustn't underestimate children's ability to understand. In fact, teaching them about the illness itself can be beneficial in the long run. When equipped with general knowledge at an early age, it allows them to establish healthy habits as soon as possible. It also boosts their self-esteem, giving them the impression that adults trust their ability to understand health issues.

Nevertheless, there is an art on how to relay such information to children. For one thing, we can't be too technical with our terms—after all, they are still children. Second, we have to be careful to avoid fear-mongering to avoid creating panic and anxiety. Lastly, we try to keep things as general as possible. This is to avoid complicating the situation and reduce the chances of children asking questions to which we don't have the answers yet.

If you need guidance on how to teach your children this disease, consider getting a copy of my book on Amazon.

Teaching Your Child, the Power of Prayer

In my book, "Jeannie Ann's Grandma Has Breast Cancer," the main character, Jeannie Ann, is a six-year-old girl who discovers that her grandmother has breast cancer. After learning about the disease from her parents and grandmother, Jeannie Ann starts to pray for her grandmother's recovery, hoping her treatment will go well.

Fortunately, her grandmother's treatment went well. While she lost her hair due to chemotherapy, Jeannie is infinitely grateful that her grandmother was able to stay with her longer.

Teaching your child to pray can be a great way to introduce your child to God. Prayer, first and foremost, is a way to connect with God and establish a relationship with him. When we teach our children to trust God and start a relationship with Him, we can ensure that their spiritual journey begins well.

If you are planning to teach your child how to start the prayer, here are the crucial steps of prayer, also known as A.C.T.S.

First is adoration. Start your prayer by praising God for His grace, strength, and mercy.

Next is confession. Confess your sins, problems, anxieties, and worries. Remember, no problem is too challenging for God. Even though He already knows your problems, it helps to verbalize them to avoid emotional pain.

Next is Thanksgiving. Express gratitude for all the blessings the Lord has given, no matter how big or small.

Last but not least is supplication. This is where our spirits are ready to ask God for our needs and desires. When we ask the Lord with longing in our hearts, He considers how these wishes can benefit us in the long run. When He doesn't answer right away, there could be two reasons: (1) It's not the right time, or (2) It's not the best choice for us.

Teaching children the power of prayer ensures their spiritual growth. When we introduce them to God at an earlier age, we give them the chance to grow spiritually, thus making them well-rounded individuals with essential virtues.

Importance of Screening for Cancer

A few months ago, I talked about the importance of getting an HPV vaccine as a precaution for potential cancer formation. Nevertheless, taking such a vaccine is only one of the many steps to prevent this deadly illness from developing. Here are some other reasons why regular screening for cancer is essential:

1. Keeps you updated on your health status.

Regularly screening for cancer can keep you updated on your overall health status. This empowers you to take a more direct role in preserving your health. You may also consider taking a yearly physical exam to check for any early signs of aging and the possible formation of other diseases. When it comes to prevention, preparation is always essential. Additionally, this allows you to ask your doctor what steps you need to take to ensure your health stays in tiptop shape.

2. Provides early detection, which results in less treatment and time spent in recovery.

Early detection of potential cancer cells can result in immediate intervention, which prevents it from progressing further. This lessens your need for heavier treatment in the long run, thus ensuring that your life can quickly return to normal once these early symptoms are swiftly handled.

3. Increases your chances of survival.

Survival is all about preparation. Such a notion is not different when taking the necessary precautions to ensure your overall health. When we invest in our health, we also clear our minds from any possible stressors, thus ensuring our immune systems stay uncompromised.

Learning to play an active role in our health ensures our overall survival, thus ensuring a peaceful state of mind. Schedule an appointment with your doctor to learn about the necessary steps in keeping your health up to date. Stay safe, and remember to start incorporating healthier habits in your daily life. You can do this!

How to Pray to God for Strength

Strength is one of the most important values that a caregiver must possess. However, regardless of the effort, we show, we are still human. Here is a guide to praying for strength during these challenging times:

1. Be open to God with your fears.

When we pray to God, we must first lay out all our burdens and problems unto Him. To do so, we must tell Him our worries and our anxieties and why we are afraid of these possibilities. Verbalizing our innermost concerns to God lets Him know that we are humble enough to ask for His ultimate guidance instead of keeping it inside. It also enables us to become closer to Him because we trust that He can understand our feelings.

2. Ask Him to lend His strength to you and your loved one.

A human's strength is nothing compared to the strength of God. How can we even compare when He was willing to sacrifice His only son for the ultimate good? With such sacrifice in mind, one needs to ask Him for strength when bringing themselves through this crisis. When we learn to ask God for His strength and courage, we become stronger—knowing that nothing is impossible for Him.

3. Ask for comfort, guidance, and the ability to make wiser decisions.

Other than strength, we also need to ask for comfort, advice, and intelligent decision-making skills. These aspects are fundamental because a cancer diagnosis is undoubtedly alarming and can be very overwhelming. When we learn to ask God for His grace, mercy, and wisdom—we become agents of His will, enabling us to carry out the tasks necessary for His purpose.

4. Thank the Lord for his infinite goodness.

Last but not least is to thank the Lord for His kindness. We cannot predict the Lord's answer and how He can help us live through this, but practicing gratefulness keeps us humble and better followers. When we learn to be grateful despite the challenges, we become better disciples, ready for miracles to happen.

We cannot predict what God's plans are. However, we can learn to become better believers despite becoming cancer caregivers. Contact your local pastor or priest for help if you need thorough spiritual guidance. Stay safe and keep the faith.

Does Positive Thinking Help?

People often confuse positive thinking with ignoring the overall bad parts of life. When we tell someone to "think positively," it often sounds dismissive, making them wonder if we even care.

In reality, "positive thinking" involves looking at things from a positive point of view. It doesn't mean to think things naively or force yourself to be happy when things are bad. It also involves being optimistic even when things seem to go against the way you want them to.

With that in mind, staying positive also brings several benefits. Some examples include:

1. Offers overall better stress management skills.

People who manage to train their minds to think positively are less likely to be affected by stress and its side effects. Stress can weaken a person's mental and physical fortitude—making them more susceptible to various diseases that may manifest physically and mentally.

2. Enhances overall psychological health.

Staying positive during trying times can enhance a person's overall psychological health. Remember, it doesn't involve denial, nor does it include seeing the world through rose-colored glasses. When people accept the things, they cannot change yet choose to live through the pain, this can increase their mental strength—giving them the courage to withstand further pain and suffering.

3. Improves the immune system.

The brain is a mighty organ. However, it can release signals affecting the body's overall physical health when stressed. Fortunately, we can prevent such potential illnesses by convincing ourselves to stay strong and to allow ourselves to recover. When we learn to take things slow and listen to our health care provider, we can provide ourselves with opportunities to better improve our health.

A cancer diagnosis may seem like the end of the world, but that doesn't mean you should give up. Contact your nearest mental health care professional if you suspect your loved one may benefit from psychological health. Good luck and stay safe.

Values that a Caregiver Must Possess

In my book, I talk about the experiences of what it was like to have a loved one with cancer, including the sudden change of becoming their primary caregiver.

As you can expect, hearing the diagnosis first-hand from a doctor can bring a lot of emotional weight. This is especially true for your loved one, who may consider such news earth-shattering. Fear, numbness, shock, anger, and sadness can overwhelm them—making them vulnerable to physical and emotional pain.

As a caregiver, one must showcase a specific set of values to show a sense of calm. Here are some virtues to consider:

1. Patience

A cancer diagnosis can cause one to feel overwhelmed and vulnerable. When people feel these emotions, they may lash out and potentially make rash decisions because they don't have much time left.

As a caregiver, you must be patient with your loved one's emotions. This step gives them time to process their diagnosis while also considering how they want to approach this together.

2. Faith

Faith is a strong belief in a person, value, or God. When people start believing in a higher sense of being or purpose, it helps them develop a sense of perspective. It also brings a sense of peace. It allows them to view their diagnosis as a challenge instead of a world-shattering event.

3. Compassion

Compassion is showing kindness and concern. After a diagnosis, your loved one may go through a series of emotions that can either be explosive or muted. You must show compassion throughout, so it gives them the sense of knowing they can be vulnerable with you. Nevertheless, you should also be stern with them when it matters. That way, you don't come across as a doormat or a "yes man."

4. Strength

Strength encompasses all these values and more. It also involves leading when your loved one diverts from their expected health care plan. For instance, if they don't take their medications, avoid the doctor, or cope with unhealthy habits—you must learn to step in and steer them on the right path. While it helps to be tough, it also pays to be gentle to not add any more stress to your loved one.

Being a caregiver requires a set of roles and responsibilities. Whether you're the spouse, friend, or family member--being a caregiver means ensuring their best interests are met. It also means playing a collaborative role while becoming the leader when necessary. If you suddenly become a caregiver, please be mindful of the values you showcase, which can affect your relationship entirely.

The Fear of the Unknown

Our future is right before our eyes. The decisions we make today will influence the dawn of our tomorrow. We live today intending to secure a future that will suit our dreams and values in life. But why do we keep recalling past happenings only to treat them as if there is no escape from a prison of agony? We rely on our yesterday only to find ourselves clawing for a way out of a mess we keep getting back into.

The fear of the unknown is something we cannot escape from. Even when we like things planned and secured ahead of time, the dreadful reality of the limitless possibilities drives people into an anxious state. There is no escaping fear, it’s either we face it, or we run from it.

When things don’t usually take the best course suited for you (which is almost at all times), it takes a little bit of courage and a sprinkle of strength to take that next step and fight for your tomorrow. What seems to be the perfect plan won’t be as perfect as it is when you start to act it out.

How do you get over that struggle? You don’t! You need to work through and through and stand your ground. Gather your spirit and be willing to do what it takes to get you through a hard battle.

The road you take may be a road that shapes you to become the best version of yourself in the future. Or maybe the road you are taking leads to an event that will teach you a vital lesson in life.

The fear of the unknown will always be present among us and within us. The chances of going through a difficult time in life are a hundred percent guaranteed. It is never too late to stop being anxious and start hoping for a better future.

Secrets to Surviving Life

When you go through a difficult path in life, you realize that there is so much more to what we think our destinies are. The dreams, goal, and thoughts we keep to ourselves keeps us alive and thriving in the journey of surviving life. Despite the worldly raucous and the threats to human civilization, our lives are worth every little ounce of hope we could gather from this ever-changing world.

Are there any secrets to surviving life? Is there a secret ingredient to recover from the turmoil when you go through heart-breaking illnesses? I bet you there is none! However, the truths to a thriving life stay embedded within my heart forever:

Keep Calm and Be Happy.

You know when things don’t go your way, and life starts to go crazy? You need to keep calm, pray, and be happy for the new day. Every day you wake up and breathe the fresh air is a gift of life. It’s always good to keep a smile on your face and be thankful.

Never disregard an opportunity.

Opportunities come and go, and there are some that would definitely lead you to your path to success. There may be times that you would think twice, but you need to remember that there are so many people praying day in and day out just to get that opportunity you are getting. The least you could do is give it a try.

See things for what they truly are.

When you see things with clarity, you become sure of the actions you want to take. Strive hard to be someone who sights the truth and the corrupted. There are those who seek to destroy you as well as uplift you.

There are no secrets to surviving life. Everything we do to accomplish our dreams and become content with our lives is because of our actions to achieve those dreams. The effort we put into becoming our better selves is an answer sitting in plain sight, but we find it so hard to see.

Dealing with the Pain

When you think life has given you everything it has to throw at you, think again. People are bound to experience horrible things. Your ability to think twice and deny the real story of your lives subjects you to a harsh reality where you cannot display and share your true emotions.

Living as if nothing is allowing you to be free and dealing with the pain in agony is something we have all experienced or will experience in the future. The chances of being relieved from a painful encounter are rarely granted to those who have sought contentedness within themselves. However, there is no other time like the present, and the world will still keep on turning even though you’re experiencing a rough patch.

A Buddhist Proverb that relays a vital message to individuals goes like this, “Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional.” The chances of freeing ourselves from the dreaded suffering stem from our minds. We can choose not to suffer; we have the option to take another approach to deal with the pain.

In a marathon, you don’t outrun the pain; you feel it. Even with the soreness of your muscles in the middle of the tracking field, the shortness of breath, and the pounding of your heart as it rapidly pumps blood throughout your body, you still choose to continue to fight and run so long as you cross the finish line. The only thing that stays on your mind is how you are sure that there is a destination with every step you take.

The road you are taking now might be filled with darkness. But never forget that you are still on the road leading somewhere. The pain you are dealing with is not permanent. Though it takes longer to go through, just take one step at a time, and someday soon, you will live past everything that is hurting you.

How Can we promote Breast Cancer Awareness?

Breast Cancer is something that can be very terrifying to the person suffering from it. Symptoms that are noticeable to the naked eye don’t usually take the surface for quite some time. It would require medical examinations to check the breasts’ conditions early in this type of illness. For women, early diagnosis is more common than for males because of how familiar women are with the state of their breasts. Despite this, the individual battles fought by those diagnosed or are suffering from some form of symptom are things we cannot just simply turn a blind eye to.

In turn, do we have to take part in raising awareness within the masses? How can we promote Breast Cancer Awareness?

Know the Symptoms

The first step of being aware is being informed. We are individuals with the power of higher intellect, and it is our duty to be informed of the things that concern us. So the primary action of spreading awareness is education. We educate ourselves about the various symptoms, statistics, coping mechanisms, and treatments that regard our topic of interest. There is no harm in learning.

Acknowledge the Risks

When you stand for a cause, there are always risks involved. Understand and acknowledge the possible risks you are taking when you start promoting awareness. Individuals who are suffering certain illnesses each have their own unique stories. It is your duty to be respectful and responsive to their needs.

Share the things you know.

When you know enough, you can share enough. Things like this work like a machine. You feed yourself good information then you share better information. However, when you feed yourself half-truths and made-up stories, you will share what you know. During times like this, you need to take responsibility for your actions and words and be that person who wants to promote awareness wholeheartedly.

It never hurts to take a step forward and be able to assist other people. Be it you, your family, your friend, or a stranger, dealing with the reality of an illness such as Breast Cancer is frightening. You ask, how can we promote Breast Cancer Awareness? It is through stepping up and being a voice for others.

Surviving Cancer (Nothing is impossible)

A dreadful encounter is not that of a temporary event but that of a permanent impact on one’s life. In surviving Cancer, it is never an undertaking to underestimate. When people have such condition, they would start to think of the many bad things that could happen to them. So many thoughts rummage through their minds that could eventually influence the course of their illness. Those who survived such an unmerciful condition usually have one thing in common- they never gave up.

“Through Him I can do anything, I can do all things ‘cause it’s You who gives me strength. NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE!” - Planetshakers, Nothing is Impossible

This song throws darts on my heart as it praises Him who gave me this life of hope. Through Him, I was able to battle this fearsome foe. This encounter I’ve been through proved that I was never alone. From my family, friends, and loved ones, I was able to gain the courage and strength. But from the Lord, I earned the will to fight and the hope to live on.

With so much going on, the goal was to get through all the pain and complete all medicine and hope for the best to come. Prayer, on the other hand, also worked.

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” - Philippians 4:13

Surviving Cancer is a tough journey. Going through all the therapies, all the heartaches, and all the trials during medical test results. This endeavour would surely slowly consume you as your days become numbered and you feel your body being eaten up by terrifying feelings. But you must know that the Lord, like He did with me, is always there and ready to help you. Believe He is there and you will know how gracious and loving our God is.

Importance of Support

Life can throw difficult, sometimes near impossible, challenges and adversities. It is best to know that you are not alone in the battle of overcoming whatever things are bothering you. This importance of support means being there for your circle and vice versa. Being there for someone who is having a tough journey means knowing what to do whenever things may go sideways. Here is a list of three things you must know whenever you may need to be the pillar for a dear friend or for a loving family member who is struggling with an illness:

1. Divert the attention

Agony is a devastating phase one can experience. It would be very difficult to directly pull a friend out of any situation whenever things become dire. Hence, as someone who can influence the struggling person, it is best to make ways on diverting attention from pain into something else. As they say, laughter is the best medicine!

2. Accomplishing their Bucket List

Bucket Lists are a set of activities listed down for the owner to accomplish in the future. Progress means accomplishments, and accomplishments lead to hope. What can be more fulfilling than having your dreams come true? Sick people are often regarded as weak beings. However, this is never true. Imagine what anyone, sick or not, could accomplish if they had the support they need to fulfill their dreams!

3. Provide assurance but not false Hope

Giving assurance that everything will be okay does no harm. As long as you know you speak from the heart and your intentions are pure. There is nothing wrong with sharing hope with the people you love. As Cancer is a deadly condition, those who are diagnosed with it try their best to think happily despite whatever pain they might be in.

Despite being on the edge of your life, never forget that you are never alone in your battles. Fighting Cancer or undergoing a terrible phase in your life, are two similarly different events. What’s for sure is to always remember that what matters most is how the importance of support is readily present in the environment around us. To be the support for other people means to be the backbone of the things they have and will accomplish throughout their lives. Even if that accomplishment is overcoming Cancer.

Telling People You have Cancer

Cancer is not an easy topic to deal with. In fact, most people tend to hide the battle they are facing when dealing with such an illness. It is common for them to experience uncomfortable regard from other people like pity and hopelessness. This makes having the condition not as easy to deal with as you might think. To have that eerie attention you gain from people who know about the condition creates an emotional barrier between you and the people around you. However, this is not an excuse to invalidate yourself and the situation you are in. One way or another, you must figure out ways on telling people that you have Cancer.

When you know your cause is true, the battle will always be worth the fight. This goes the same for the people around you. Fighting Cancer is a challenging encounter. It drains you physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, socially, and financially. It is no doubt a consuming journey no matter how much you try to look at it. But bad things will always find their way to take you wholly, it always helps to have your family and trusted individuals be aware of this reality before this darkness will gobble you up.

"You don't get to choose if you get hurt in this world, old man, but you do have some say in who hurts you." - Gus, The Fault in our Stars

Being in control over you and your emotions will provide you with a calming feeling of courage. Knowing that your loved ones are aware of your condition will give you that peace of mind when facing a tremendous foe, especially Cancer. You will know your true strength in your battle. Some may not be the same for others but it all boils down to being in control of the views and opinions you take from others as well as yourself. Telling people you have cancer is a challenge you are also to take on in your battles.

How You Get Back Up

Our lives are not as smooth as you may think. At times, the roads get rough and bumpy and all of a sudden, you feel as though everything in your life is falling apart. The things you are holding on to and the dreams you are hoping for suddenly disappear as the news of having an incurable illness haunts your very being. You wake up every day to see others living life as they are, healthily and happily, as you remain stuck in a prisoned-state you cannot escape no matter how hard you try. This is how illnesses destroy you, but this isn’t what matters. What’s important is how you get back up and see the world for the beauty it holds.

Once you’ve fallen down, standing up again will be quite the challenge. To address this issue, I have made a list of tips for you to remember whenever you’ve lost hope to stand again:

1. Know where you are

Being grounded in reality is a key factor that influences your mentality. Knowing where you stand can provide you the insight into what you need to do in order to overcome any adversities in life.

2. Remember what you are living for

Staying alive is a challenge for most people. We are haunted by forces that only we can understand ourselves. No one knows you better than yourself. But whenever you keep yourself motivated on the things you so willingly fight for, surviving would become thriving and you will see all the wonders humanity can give you.

3. Pray

Praying can bring you the hope that only a force greater than ourselves can provide. Acknowledging the fact that you cannot do it alone and asking for help will lift the weight on your shoulders tenfold. Our God is a good and gracious God. He does not leave us alone especially in times of need. Praying helps you to gain that spiritual strength to continue your journey towards the unknown future.

These three things are what encourage us to be mindful of the actions we’ve done throughout our lives. How you get back up is a trivial problem only you can solve. But these are the essentials we must take with us through every journey in every possible way, no baggage required!
